Wayne and Coleen Rooney's baby joy

Wayne and Coleen Rooney are celebrating the birth of their first baby - a boy - at Liverpool's Women's Hospital

England footballer Wayne Rooney's wife Coleen has given birth to a baby boy.

Kai Wayne Rooney was born at 2.20pm at Liverpool Women's Hospital, their spokesman said.

The spokesman added: "Mother and baby are both absolutely fine. Wayne and Coleen are thrilled with the wonderful addition to their family life."

Rooney, 24, was absent from training for his club Manchester United on Monday amid growing speculation that his wife was set to give birth to the couple's first child.

He will now almost certainly be excused from playing for his side in their next fixture against CSKA Moscow at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

News that Coleen, 23, was pregnant emerged earlier this year although rumours had regularly circulated since the couple's spectacular wedding on the Italian Riviera last summer.

Coleen is the eldest of four children to bricklayer dad Tony and nursery nurse mum Colette. Wayne is the eldest of three. Both have large extended families.

Rooney's parents Jeanette and Wayne senior have two other sons, John and Graham.

The couple have been together since they were 14, and the England star reportedly proposed on a petrol station forecourt in Liverpool.

Shortly before they announced that they were expecting their first child, Mrs Rooney said to Reveal magazine that she would like to be a full-time mother.

She said: "I would like to have a family - maybe three or four children - and I would be happy to be a full-time mum. I do enjoy my work but I'd be happy when we do have children to just get on with that."

As well as writing a magazine column, she presents ITV's Coleen's Real Women in which she pitches normal women against full-time models for publicity jobs.

She has also modelled clothes for supermarket chain Asda, has written books and launched her own perfume.

Relatives from both sides of the family passed in and out of the hospital on Monday afternoon.

Rooney's brother Graham arrived alongside his cousin Claire, a close friend of Coleen's, who carried a bunch of flowers for the couple.

His father, also Wayne, and his mother Jeanette were among the well-wishers who visited the hospital.

Coleen's mother Colette and brother Joe were also seen leaving the hospital.
