Sir Paul McCartney will return to Merseyside in June for a concert at Liverpool FC's Anfield Stadium.

The former Beatle will join The Zutons and the Kaiser Chiefs for a special one-off gig as part of Liverpool's European Capital of Culture celebrations.

Sir Paul said: "I'm very excited about Liverpool being the European Capital of Culture in 2008. We have a fantastic series of events which are sure to get you excited too.

"I'm very proud of the city and I look forward to welcoming you all and showing you a good time. It's going to be a great year."

Sir Paul's Beatles bandmate Ringo Starr headlined the Capital of Culture opening celebration in January.

Macca's Liverpool Sound concert will be the last to be held at Anfield Stadium before Liverpool FC moves to a new home.

Along with Sir Paul, The Zutons are born and bred Liverpudlians.

After the concert they start their first tour in two years to promote forthcoming album You Can Do Anything.

Highlights from the concert will be shown that evening on BBC Two. BBC radio will also be covering the event.
