Early Life: Mike was born in Canada to English parents, and was surrounded with British influences in his early years. His family are from Liverpool, and he spoke with a Scouse accent until he was six - something he'd dropped by the time he appeared in adverts for Pepsi and Kit-Kat aged eight.

He continued his interest in entertainment throughout high school, and upon graduation in 1982 immediately joined Toronto's Second City comedy troupe.

In 1985 he moved to England as one of the founding members of the Comedy Store Players, before heading to America in 1989 to begin a long stint on Saturday Night Live.

One of his most popular characters on the show was slacker Wayne Campbell from Wayne's World, which he turned into a cult hit film in 1992.

Career High: In 2000, Mike won the Funniest Actor in a Motion Picture gong at the American Comedy Awards, for Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.

Love Life: Mike married Robin Ruzan in 1993 and they were considered one of the strongest couples in Hollywood, but filed for divorce in 2005.

Don't Mention: Mike was reportedly sued by Universal for pulling out of a deal to play Saturday Night Live character Dieter in a feature film. They reached a settlement which saw Mike play Dr Seuss character The Cat In The Hat.

Words Of Wisdom: "My theory is that all of Scottish cuisine is based on a dare."
