Early Life: Michael was born in Rotherhithe in London.
During World War II he was evacuated to Norfolk and passed his 11-plus exam while he was there.
He left school at 16 and did his two years National Service in the Royal Fusiliers, serving in Germany and Korea.
On his return, Michael got a job as an assistant stage manager at a theatre and got an agent, changing his name from Micklewhite to Caine.
Career High: He was awarded a knighthood in 2000 for his services to the performing arts.
Love Life: Michael was married to actress Patricia Haines from 1955 to 1958. They had one daughter, Dominique.
He wed actress and model Shakira Baksh in 1973. They also have a daughter, Natasha.
Don't Mention: Michael was the first person to be nominated for an acting Razzie award for more than one title.
He was nominated for Worst Actor of 1980 for his roles in the films Dressed To Kill and The Island.
