Billy Bragg has reportedly added his voice to the music piracy debate.

Former singer Feargal Sharkey has backed Government plans to crack down on illegal internet music downloads, but folk singer Billy has stood up for online audiences, The Sun reports.

"Criminalising audiences won't help musicians make a living as it will drive listeners away," he is reported to have said.

The regular festival performer, who has more than 10 studio albums to his name, said an arrangement such as the one record companies have with radio stations could be a solution.

"Commercial radio is free but the station pays a cut to the artist. I don't see why online music sites can't do the same.

"Things are changing whether we like it or not. People will be trying music for free, sharing with each other. Music has more rivals than ever before. We need to encourage our audience to enjoy it," he reportedly said.
