Charlize Theron has said she's proud of her latest film - despite not walking away with a huge pay cheque.

The star said you don't do a film like The Burning Plain for the huge financial reward.

Speaking at the Venice Film Festival, where her movie is showing in competition, Charlize said: "When we did Monster we had a very limited budget and that was a great way for me to learn. Working with Monster, we had a dollar and 50 cents that had to go far and we had to be creative.

"When you say yes to a film like this, you're kidding yourself if you think you're going to be walking away with a multi-million dollar house next year.

"You don't do it for that.

"We're part of something we're incredibly proud of. That satisfaction you can't buy."

Charlize, who is also executive producer on the film, plays a feisty restaurant manager with a tendancy to self-harm.
