Early Life: David was born and grew up in New York.

He attended The Collegiate School For Boys in Manhattan.

After school, he went to Princeton University and then did a Master's degree in English Literature at Yale.

He was very interested in drama and apparently abandoned plans to do a PhD to pursue acting full time.

David's first appearance on TV was in an ad for beer in 1987. He went on to have a small recurring role in the series Twin Peaks.

In 1993, he got his big break when he landed the role of Fox Mulder in The X-Files TV series.

Career High: Winning a Best Actor Golden Globe this year for his role as troubled novelist Hank in the TV series Californication.

Love Life: David is married to actress Tea Leoni. The pair tied the knot in 1997 and they have since had two children - daughter Madelaine, nine, and six-year-old son Kyd.

Don't Mention: His long-running stint as the narrator in soft-core porn series The Red Shoe Diaries.
