The stars were out to win in the style stakes as well as in the TV ones at this year's Emmys, but most of the big names opted to play it safe fashionwise.
It was black, black and more black on the red carpet, with acting gong winner Glenn Close, nominee Ashley Jensen and presenter America Ferrera all opting for demure numbers - the latter keeping to the trend for strapless dresses that seemed to be the theme of the evening. Kate Walsh and Debra Messing also went for the understated noir look.
But some celebs did provide a bit of colour relief at least. Brooke Shields showed the rest how to dazzle in a deep pink Badgley Mischka dress, while Emmy winner Laura Linney looked elegant in a one-shouldered pastel number.
Christina Applegate shimmered her way back onto the red carpet after her recent cancer treatment in a gorgeous metallic frock, and also wore an up-do that seemed to be the order of the day.
Vanessa Williams was one of the few truly flamboyant stars in her Kevan Hall white and black printed dress, and may have just edged the Ugly Betty style contest.
As for the Desperate Housewives, Felicity Huffman can probably take the best dressed title this year, with her sleek silver frock and even sleeker bobbed hair. Marcia Cross wasn't far behind in a pretty creation adorned with flowers, while newcomer Dana Delaney didn't take any risks with her vintage beaded number.
Unfortunately, Eva Longoria Parker looked like she'd come gift wrapped in Marchesa, while Teri Hatcher's bright yellow ruffles were more Easter chick than chic.
