An art deco sapphire and diamond clip brooch once owned by pop rocker Sir Elton John failed to sell at auction today.

The bejewelled brooch, created in around 1935, was expected to go under the hammer for between £12,000 and £15,000.

Designed in the form of the letter J, it includes multiple old brilliant-cut and baguette-cut diamonds, five oval-cut sapphires and a bombe cluster of circular-cut sapphires.

The brooch was a highlight of Bonhams' Sale of Fine Jewellery in London's New Bond Street.

A photograph accompanying the brooch showed Sir Elton wearing it during the filming of the video for his 1988 song I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That.
