Christian Bale can be seen battling both man and machine in the new Terminator Salvation trailer.

The official trailer of the fourth and final instalment in the robot and time travel action thrillers - made famous by Arnold Scwarzenegger in the 80s and 90s - was unveiled courtesy of Sony Pictures Releasing on Wednesday with a special introduction from director McG.

Set in post-apocalyptic 2018, Bale stars as John Connor whose destiny is to lead the human resistance against Skynet and its army of Terminators. But the future that Connor was raised to believe in is altered by the appearance of Marcus Wright, played by Sam Worthington. Marcus is a stranger whose last memory is of being on death row and Connor must work out if he has been sent from the future, or rescued from the past.

The dark and ominous trailer is packed with explosions, motorcycle chases, gun fights, air invasions as Bale's voiceover rasps: "I knew it was coming, I thought I knew our enemy, but I don't know if we can win this war. We're outnumbered by machines and we've all lost so very much.

"This is not the future my mother warned me about. Something has changed. This war ends tonight."

The trailer ends with the words "The End, Begins, Terminator Salvation" flashing in the dark.

The film also stars Anton Yelchin as Kyle Reese, Bryce Dallas Howard as Kate Brewster, Moon Bloodgood as Blair Williams, Helena Bonham Carter as Serena Kogen, Common as Barnes, and Jadagrace as Star.

Terminator Salvation will be released in the UK on June 5 2009 by Sony Pictures.
