Leona Lewis honoured by Peta

17 December 2008 03:06pm

Leona Lewis has been named Peta's Person of the Year for her commitment to animal rights.

The Run singer, who is vegetarian and refuses to wear fur or leather, turned down an offer of £1 million from Harrods to open its summer sale because it sells fur.

The 23-year-old, who found fame after winning The X Factor two years ago, also plans to produce a line of leather-free shoes and accessories.

Leona has previously said: "I think fur is totally cruel, and I can't endorse or support anything related to that as it's against my beliefs, no matter what you pay me".

Peta's European director, Robbie LeBlanc, said: "Leona Lewis is admired for her beautiful voice, but it's her kindness to animals that makes her a superstar in our book."

Leona was also voted Peta's 2008 Sexiest Vegetarian Alive earlier this year.

Peta's Person of the Year 2007 was Stella McCartney.
