Noel Clarke said he's the "underdog" of the actors nominated for the Orange Rising Star Bafta award.
The Doctor Who actor - who also wrote and appeared in the films Kidulthood and Adulthood - admitted he isn't confident about scooping the gong.
"I think I'm the underdog," he said. "I don't think anyone is expecting me to get it. I think people know who they think will get it."
Noel is up against Toby Kebbell, Rebecca Hall, Michael Fassbender and Michael Cera.
"I think Rebecca Hall's brilliant so if anyone I wouldn't mind if she won, although Fassbender's great and so is Toby, so for me there's no favourite to who I prefer," he said.
Noel has been dubbed 'Britain's Spike Lee' in reference to his acting, directing and writing roles. He said he finds the nametag a compliment, but joked: "I think I'm a better actor than him though!"
"When he was young he was kind of like this militant kind of guy who was just making films for a specific audience, which isn't a problem, and now he's gone on and makes great, amazing movies. If I could do half of that then I'd be very happy."
Noel said being from a "tough" background, he hopes his award nod may inspire youngsters to get involved with filmmaking. "Maybe it'll make them think 'you know what, I can do this as well'," he said.
