Mat Horne has admitted he would love to play Doctor Who.

The Gavin And Stacey star joked that bosses on the sci-fi show made a mistake by picking actor Matt Smith to take over the Tardis from David Tennant, reports The Sun.

"The producers obviously had a meeting and went, 'There's this young guy called Matt something who wants to do it.' And they picked the wrong Matt," he said.

The 30-year-old conceded the new Time Lord is "brilliant" and deserves the role, but admitted: "I'd have loved to do it."

Mat - who will soon be seen on the big screen in comedy horror Lesbian Vampire Killers - joked he would be "waiting in the wings in case he (Matt) has a mysterious road accident".

Matt Smith takes over as the Doctor when David Tennant leaves at the end of the year.
