Jeffrey Dean Morgan has revealed how portraying a ruthless cigar-chomping sadist in his latest film took its toll on him.
The Grey's Anatomy actor plays The Comedian in Zack Snyder's superhero movie Watchmen - a crucial figure in the film even though he is killed off at the beginning. And he admits playing such an unsavoury character was tough, especially when he had to film an attempted rape scene.
"It was much beyond an attempted rape, it was absolutely vicious," he admits. "That scene in particular was much harder than anything else that I have ever filmed in my life. The beating that I give her is so vicious and so real that I had to walk away for a week."
Jeffrey admits he even doubted his decision to make the film after the scene.
"I went up to the mountains of Vancouver and thought, did I make a good choice here in this? I never thought in a million years it could possibly bother me, but - for whatever reason - it did."
Although Jeffrey was constantly attached to The Comedian's signature cigar during filming, he hasn't become an addict.
"I got used to it; though I have to say that I have not smoked a cigar since we made the movie," he says.
"I don't smoke cigars, and because I do smoke cigarettes, in the middle of a scene, I would be inhaling because I forgot it was a cigar. I would be green."
:: Watchmen is released in cinemas on March 6.
