Charlize Theron after comic role

4 March 2009 04:49pm

Charlize Theron said she would like to swap "doom and gloom" to play a comic character.

Theron has travelled to Britain to promote her latest movie The Burning Plain, about a woman with a troubled childhood.

In an interview with Richard and Judy, the 33-year-old actress said: "I'm starting to figure that if there's a woman in a 'doom and gloom' scenario, my name comes up... the next one has to be a comedy."

Charlize, who played serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster, was shown video footage of an early performance as a ballerina.

She enthused: "I've always let it be known that I would love to do a musical. I love going to ballet, it's very cathartic."

She also brushed off talk of any plans for engagement to long-term partner Stuart Townsend, saying that impending marriage was not on her priority list.

"I've absolutely no desire. It's just not something that I've ever kind of wanted. I like being his girlfriend."

Charlize also talked of her preoccupation with tidiness, saying: "It's not a cool thing. I wish I did something hip and cool. Being neat is considered to be conservative and boring."

When prompted to recall an incident at school remembered by one of her teachers, she confessed: "I did start drinking at a very early age, so my memory is a bit dodgy."

The interview will be broadcast tomorrow at 6pm on Watch.
