Cheryl Cole's husband Ashley has been arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly.

The 28-year-old Chelsea and England footballer was arrested in South Kensington, central London at about 2.15am today (Thursday).

He was taken to a central London police station and issued a fixed penalty notice for being drunk and disorderly before being released shortly after 5.30am.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "We can confirm a 28-year-old man was arrested at approximately 2.15am in Brompton Road on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly. He was taken to a central London police station where he was issued with a fixed penalty notice for being drunk and disorderly and released shortly after 5.30am."

Ashley was out drinking with Chelsea and England captain John Terry, according to a member of staff at the bar, which is a regular haunt for celebrities.

A police source also revealed officers were not called to the scene as a result of Cole's actions. The source added: "The officers were there anyway - but they were then alerted to the fact that Cole may have been acting drunk and disorderly."

Before his arrest last night, Ashley was pictured at a nearby charity event with ex-GMTV presenter Fiona Phillips.

Meanwhile Cheryl was treated for altitude sickness during the Comic Relief trek up Mount Kilimanjaro. She became the second member of the camp to have an anti-sickness jab after Fearne Cotton collapsed the previous night.

A Twitter update from the group read this morning: "Cheryl, who was ill in the night and had to have an anti sickness jab, is taking (it) slowly."

Cheryl had already said: "The fun is over. This is unquestionably the hardest thing I have ever done."
