Charlize Theron was taught a few swearwords on the set of her latest film - and was unwittingly made to repeat them.

The 33-year-old star revealed how Mexican director Guillermo Arriaga, whom she worked with on new movie The Burning Plain, took advantage of her innocence and used her as a foul-mouthed go-between with his friend while they were filming.

The South African actress said: "Of course he taught me the dirty stuff! He had a really good friend with him and I was this little messenger between them. His friend Adrian was like 'Go to Guillermo and say... I can't remember now, and I would say it really loud and half the crew understood it!"

Such gaffes have spurred Charlize on to master the language. She said: "I'm really embarrassed to say that I don't speak Spanish, I've lived in California for eight years and I just think it should be a prerequisite, you should be able to speak Spanish if you live in California."

She is all the more determined because she failed to pick up the dialect before shooting commenced: "I had this fantasy, 'cos I've always wanted to learn Spanish, that I would learn Spanish before I shot the movie with him, that he would be really impressed with me, that he could direct me in Spanish but of course it never happened."

:: The Burning Plain is out in cinemas on March 13.
