Forecasters are predicting a hot and sunny Bank Holiday weekend, but warn there could be some showers around.

Temperatures could hit highs of 23 degrees in the sunshine in parts of the country on Sunday and Monday.

Eastern areas will see the best of the weather on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, while west Wales and the South West are more likely to see showers.

Matt Dobson, forecaster for MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said: "The east of England is going to get the best of the weather.

"If you escape the thunderstorms it will be hot and bright."

More showers are expected but they won't be as bad as those seen in parts of the country on Thursday, he said.

Friday will be cooler, with highs of about 16 degrees in the south Midlands and South East. On Saturday, the western parts of the country will see fine weather with some rain.

But Mr Dobson said: "The further east you go the more you will see hazy sunshine."

Temperatures will hit 20 degrees in London and will be only a few degrees lower elsewhere. On Sunday it will be one or two degrees warmer, with Yorkshire, the East Midlands and the South East seeing the best weather.

Monday is predicted to be warm and humid with only a few thunderstorms in the east. In western areas it will be cooler with sunny spells.
