Council workers went ahead with the second day of a 48-hour strike after talks aimed at resolving a pay row ended without agreement.

The GMB union said the walkout by refuse collectors at Leeds City Council was causing "chaos", and would be followed by a work-to-rule.

Union official Phil Chard said 2,500 council staff faced pay cuts of up to £6,000 because of a pay and grading review being carried out in response to national requirements over equal pay.
