One in four people who ran up debt last Christmas are still repaying the bill, a survey has shown.
Four out of 10 people used credit cards or other forms of borrowing to meet festive costs last year, according to price website Savebuckets.com.
But only 29% of these people had managed to clear their debt during January, while 24% were still paying it off.
People in their 30s were most likely to be still repaying debt run up last Christmas, with 47% borrowing money last year and 35% still repaying it.
James Wenger, of Savebuckets.com, said: "With a rising number of Britons still paying for last Christmas it raises alarm bells over how the pattern will continue into 2009 as the economic turmoil continues."
YouGov questioned 2,026 people during October.
