As many as 36% of Britons intend to ward off "recession depression" by taking more than one holiday this summer, a survey has revealed.

But most are staying close to home, with only 23% of adults planning a trip outside the eurozone, the poll by Sainsbury's Travel Insurance found.

In all, Britons plan to take a total of 56 million holidays this summer, spending nearly £44 billion or about £784 each.

More than three in five plan to have at least one break in Britain, with 36% intending to make trips within the eurozone.

Sainsbury's Travel Insurance manager Sam Marrs said: "Despite tough economic conditions, it would appear that, rather than sacrificing our holidays, we Britons may even be taking more breaks in a bid to put all the credit-crunch doom and gloom behind us."
