Elephant beetle in quest for mate

4 June 2008 06:27am

A zoo is trying to find a mate for a beetle the size of a hamster.

Linton Zoo near Cambridge was given the male elephant beetle - one of the biggest bugs on earth - by pest controllers after it turned up in bananas brought into London from Costa Rica.

Keepers say the beetle, which eats fruit and was found in a food packing factory, is an endangered species and a rare visitor to England.
