The trial of a man accused of murdering Pc Sharon Beshenivsky during a robbery more than three years ago is due to begin.

Mustaf Jama, 28, faces trial before Newcastle Crown Court also accused of robbery, possession of firearms and possessing prohibited weapons.

The charges relate to the shooting of Pc Beshenivsky, 38, and the wounding of her colleague Pc Teresa Milburn during a robbery at the Universal Travel Agents on Morley Street in Bradford in November 2005.

Pc Beshenivsky, a mother of three children and two stepchildren, died on her daughter's fourth birthday after being shot in the chest.

She had been a serving constable for only nine months.

The late Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police, Colin Cramphorn, described the officer shortly after her death as an "enthusiastic, mature and very positive colleague" with an infectious laugh.

Pc Beshenivsky had been a police community support officer for two years before joining the West Yorkshire force.
