A man charged in connection with a siege at a factory has been remanded in custody.

Bomb squad officers and dozens of emergency crews were called to the Alfred Knight metal works in St Helens, Merseyside, on Thursday after a man acting suspiciously entered the premises.

Jean Claude Rubagire, 35, of no fixed abode, is accused of one count of making a threat to kill, one count of making a bomb hoax and three counts of false imprisonment.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said Rubagire was remanded in custody by Knowsley magistrates and will next appear before them on March 23.

Staff fled the Prescot Road factory - a converted suburban house - and no-one was injured during the incident.

The three hostages were released within a hour of the suspect entering the building.
