A huge salvage operation is under way after firefighters brought a blaze in a historic area of central London under control.

A team of 75 firefighters tackled the blaze in Field House, Bream's Buildings, Chancery Lane.

The fire at the building which housed the Asylum and Immigration Tribunal was now said to be "surrounded and under control".

A spokeswoman for the London Fire Brigade said three 15kg propane cylinders on the roof of the building had caused concern.

"About 75% of the roof was damaged by the fire," she said.

"We have an extensive salvage operation on floors up to the fourth floor."

More than 100 people were evacuated after the blaze broke out in the office block on Wednesday afternoon.

One eyewitness described a "huge black plume of smoke" rising into the sky as fire engines rushed to the scene.

A Tribunals Service spokeswoman said all hearings due to take place had been cancelled and it is likely that all hearings at Field House will be postponed for the remainder of this week.
